About Chess

Chess against a computer opponent that runs entirely in your browser. There is no server move, no account and no waiting for a match: pick a difficulty, drag a piece and the engine answers. All the real rules are implemented, including castling, en passant, underpromotion, the fifty-move rule, threefold repetition and the draws by insufficient material that catch people out in won endgames.

Four bot opponents share one engine and differ in how much of it they are allowed to use. Dumb searches a few moves ahead, scrambles its own evaluation and throws in an outright random move about a quarter of the time, so beating it is a matter of noticing the gift. Decent plays an honest search and will take any piece you leave hanging. Smart thinks for a couple of seconds and reliably punishes a loose tactic. Unbeatable gets six seconds and does not blunder. A fifth mode drops the bot entirely for pass-and-play chess between two people at one screen, turning the board around after every move so whoever is to play is always looking at it the right way up.

The evaluation bar stays hidden while the game is going, because a live readout of who is winning is a hint rather than a feature. It appears once the game is over, so you can see where it actually turned. The engine is a conventional alpha-beta searcher with a transposition table carried between moves, null-move pruning, late move reductions and a quiescence search, on a tapered piece-square evaluation that also reads doubled, isolated and passed pawns. Its move generator is verified against the standard perft positions, so the legal moves it offers you are exactly the legal moves.
